Love In The Time of Cholera

Or January.

I seem to have a knack for Ending Things this time of year. I guess the winter is a good time for breaking up, being all cold and yucky. It's perfect for crying and snuggling on the couch with the dog, taking baths and sleeping in, or meeting friends for drinks and comfort food. Of course, it's harder when those surprise beautiful days pop up, like today, as they always do in Atlanta - when you're just leaving someone do they make you feel better, or worse?

These are just some of the thoughts running through my head right now, as the last few days have brought the latest Relationship Change in my personal story. We needed to make changes to how things were and we proved we couldn't do it together, so I did it for us. I move into my new place in a few days, and am trying to be excited about that and focus on the good things ahead. The sunshine outside this weekend does help with the sadness, and all the love and support from my amazing friends and family keep me strong and focused. So does working a lot - and sleeping pills at night, I'm not gonna lie!

I remember posting months ago about how lucky and happy we were, and I hope to find that again. I hope to hold onto the good we had. I hope to find my muse again and be inspired to write well and frequently again, soon.

Stay tuned . . .

Carrie Neal

Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology

Yeah, I'm quoting Jack Johnson. Sometimes, he just gets it right. And he can also be quite the philosopher. So as another year draws to a close, and it's that time to reflect and muse over those things done right and wrong in the past 11-ish months, I am sitting up late thinking of, well, what can best be summed up by the title to one of his songs . . .

This post can probably most aptly be written as a series of questions - for myself but perhaps for others, as well - so I will pose them in the third person:

Where are you? In your life, personally and professionally? Do you like that "place"? If not, what are you doing about it? What do you hope to do differently (in any way or area), in 2011? And does it freak you out that we're about to be in 2011?? (For the record, it does me! This could be because I am a child of the 70s and 80s, a teen of the 90s - heading into my year of turning 35 which I think is awesome but it just sounds . . . strange) What mistakes (red wine-induced, or otherwise) are you grateful for, or do you regret? How do you feel wiser thanks to 2010? Was it a good year, or are you dying for it to be over - or somewhere in the muddling in-between, or did it vacillate wildly from one extreme to the other?

Looking back at this time last year . . . how do you feel? Do you have an overarching sentiment about where you are now compared to then, or something you'd tell your then-self about what this year would bring, or what you hope your future-self will be feeling this time next year?

Please indulge and forgive all the pre Auld Lang Syne-esque musings . . . I get a bit more introspective than is even usual for me this time of year, and have a bunch to reflect on now in particular. My hope for you is that you have a happy holiday season, and that 2011 brings much joy and peace, prosperity and fun to you and yours.

Carrie Neal

If the Shoe(box) Fits . . . Be a Good Samaritan!

It's the Giving Season, y'all! That's right, I'm up on my soapbox, er, shoebox and I've got a message I think very worth sharing. Samaritan's Purse is a very cool charity that takes the message from the Gospel of Luke - the story of the Good Samaritan, you know the one: Jesus tells his followers to help those in need, whomever and wherever they are. You can learn all about them and about this special holiday effort here:
Samaritan's Purse: Pack a Shoebox!!

If you are interested, you can do what some friends of mine and I are doing - and what one very ambitious cousin of mine, my namesake Ella Neal, who along with her church is doing, a slew of shoe boxes - and pack up a box or two for a boy or girl who'll be thrilled to get it this season. Pick an age category (2-4, 5-9 or 10-14) and follow the printable instructions on the website as to what to pack and how to get it off to the right hands. Search by zip code to find a drop-off location during this "giving week" (November 15-22) or look for the address you can mail your box(es) to, and how to include the small donation ($7) to cover costs for Samaritan's Purse and participating churches and missions. It's not just because I love shoes, or because this is an economically feasible way for me to give this year, but something about this neat charity and their message really spoke to me. I think my 10-14 year old girl will be happy with what "Carrie Neal Land" came up with for her!!

It's a small thing, I know, but it was fun to do and feel part of something good and big. Speaking of, I found a great card that showed a "manger scene" of doggies with a very Big-like baby Jesus that was too cute to pass up - and included it as a note with my card, as the project guidelines suggest you do with your box. Maybe my girl will be inclined to write back and I'll have a pen pal, who knows? Whatever happens, and if you decide to participate, too . . . I hope you have a happy holiday season as it gets underway, goes along, and moves into the New Year. Best to you and yours!

As Always,
Carrie Neal
